Rohani said on Sunday that the national oil company had "found an oil deposit with (estimated reserves) 53 billion barrels" between the cities of Omidiyeh and Bostan, in Khuzestan, southwestern province of 'Iran.
"This is a small gift from the government to the people of Iran," Rohani added, as the country's economy suffers from the effect of economic sanctions reinstated against Tehran by the United States since August 2018.
According to the minister, the figure of 53 billion barrels announced by Mr. Rohani corresponds to all reserves discovered in this region, where Iran had already found five deposits representing accumulated reserves of "31 billion barrels of oil" .
According to Ministry data, the new deposit covers 2,400 square kilometers, is located 3.1 kilometers deep and its thickness is 80 meters.
The "added amount [by this discovery to the country's reserves] is 22.2 billion barrels," Zanganeh said.
According to the latest edition of the "Global Energy Statistical Review" published annually by the British oil group BP, Iran has the world's fourth largest proven oil reserves, behind Venezuela, Saudi Arabia and Canada, with 155.6 billion barrels.
